2010 Featured Title: The Soloist A Lost Dream, An Unlikely Friendship, and the Redemptive Power of Music. Author: Steve Lopez  Synopsis: When Steve Lopez sees Nathaniel Ayers playing his heart out on a two-string violin on Los Angeles's Skid Row, he envisions this "Violin Man" as the topic of his next column for the Los Angeles Times-- only to unearth an even more extraordinary story about the mysterious street musician. More than thirty years earlier, Ayers had been a promising classical bass student at Juilliard--ambitious, charming and also one one of the few African-Americans at the school--until he gradually lost his ability to function, overcome by a mental breakdown.  When Lopez finds him, Ayers is alone, suspicious of everyone and deeply troubled, but glimmers of that brilliance are still there. From an impromptu concert of Beethoven's Eighth in the Second Street tunnel to a performance of Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites on Skid Row, the two men learn to communicate through Ayer's music.  Their bond takes torturous turns as Lopez imagines he can change Ayer's life--finding him lodging, reconnecting him with his family, taking him to Disney Concert Hall to meet a former Juilliard classmate.  For each triumph, there is a crushing disappointment, yet neither man gives up.  And though it's Ayers he initially sets out to save, Lopez finds that his own life is profoundly changed.

John Adams' Nixon in China is considered a landmark of contemporary opera. The world changed with President Nixon's 1972 visit to China, and the walls between East and West began to crumble. In this work, a profound historical event has become a mesmerizing drama filled with riveting music, striking choruses, and stunning ballets. The political and private lives of Richard Nixon, Chairman Mao, Henry Kissinger, and Pat Nixon set the stage for this masterpiece by Adams, who is recognized as the most frequently performed living American composer of orchestral music.Subscriptions are available now and can be purchased online at www.longbeachopera.org or by calling the Long Beach Opera Box Office at (562) 432-5934.  Subscription prices range from $67.00 to $142.00. Girls Gone Funny at the Found http://dlba.org/residents/Events?id=525 Saturday, March 20 2010 8pm- The Found is celebrating Women's History Month on three Saturdays in March, showcasing women poets, comedians, and musicians. The second installment, "Girls Gone Funny," features today's hippest and hottest TV and touring comedians. Headlining the show is the brilliant Lizzy Cooperman ("Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson"), while the host for the evening is Shannon Hatch. Also on the line-up are spoken word artist Daroo, and comedians Claire Titelman, Amber Tozer ("Last Comic Standing"), and Jan Davidson (Nickelodeon's "Funniest Mom in America"). It's a rare comedy bill featuring so many talented women. Even in the 21st century, most comedy clubs won't put more than one or two women on an evening's line-up. How messed up is that? The Found is tipping the scales with this all female comedy show guaranteed to create a new chapter in women's history. Admission is $10
